Concussion Warning Signs

Nov 30, 2015

In regards to contact sports, players that participate in sports with a high level of physicality and contact, such as football, hockey and soccer are at risk for suffering from concussions.

A concussion is a change in mental status due to a traumatic impact of the head.  Millions of traumatic brain injuries occur in the U.S. each year, but most don’t require a visit to the hospital.  However, people who have had concussions before are more likely to have them again.

Trainers and coaching staff should be aware that not all those who suffer from a concussion will lose consciousness.

Concussion Warning Signs:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Loss of balance
  • Drowsiness
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Blurry vision
  • Difficulty concentrating

These concussion symptoms may occur right away, but some may not start for weeks or even months after the injury.  Anyone suspected of suffering from a concussion should be removed from play until a proper medical evaluation can be performed.
